Jacobsen Introduces New Turf Groomer®

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 22, 2007) — Jacobsen®, a Textron Inc. (NYSE:TXT) company, pioneered the industry's first groomer in 1986 and today introduces the newest Turf Groomer® available for all current Jacobsen fairway mowers with 7-inch diameter reels. Easy to install, adjust, and maintain, the Jacobsen Turf Groomer holds true to its settings.

"Superintendents told us they wanted to take the hassle out of grooming and we listened," said Todd Kierstead, Jacobsen product manager. "With the newest Turf Groomer, superintendents and maintenance professionals can make adjustments quickly and because it installs with just four bolts, assembly is simple."

Designed so superintendents can conveniently groom their courses more often, the new Turf Groomer features several innovations designed for simplicity:

  • Reels can be sharpened while the groomer is attached
  • All adjustments are made from the front of the reel
  • A shorter roller base allows the cutting head to closely follow contours
  • The roller is continuously cleaned, even when groomer is not lowered
  • A new Poly-V belt is less likely to break if the mower hits an obstruction
  • Lube points are easily accessible, located on the end of the shafts
  • Adjustments and settings are maintained during cleaning

The newest Jacobsen Turf Groomer was designed for simplicity and reliability, making grooming as easy as possible. Reels can be sharpened with the groomer in place and the roller is continuously cleaned, even when raised out of the grooming position. (more  photos)

According to Dr. Milt Engelke, Ph.D., professor at Texas A&M University and a Jacobsen agronomy consultant, grooming is the easiest, most stress-free way to promote vertical growth in golf course turf. The use of groomers helps eliminate grain, smoothes irregularities and makes individual blades stand erect for consistency and better play. The regular use of groomers will foster a thicker community of plants and healthier more robust turf.

"A big reason why most superintendents don't practice grooming is because it used to be difficult. Our newest Turf Groomer eliminates that concern," Kierstead said. "It's the easiest groomer on the market to install, adjust and maintain, giving superintendents reason to groom their courses more regularly."

In developing a groomer to fit Jacobsen's 7-inch diameter reels, the company collaborated with superintendents and technicians who shared ideas that led to several innovations making the Turf Groomer more user-friendly.

Eric Bauer, director of grounds at The Woodlands golf course in Houston, TX, was one of the superintendents who provided feedback. "Jacobsen asked us what our needs were. They listened to what we had to say and came up with a Turf Groomer that will make it easier for guys like me to groom my course more regularly."

Turf Groomers will be available from local Jacobsen dealers beginning in March 2007. A new educational video about the benefits of grooming featuring Dr. Milt Engelke is now available. Turf professionals can order a free DVD copy online by visiting   www.jacobsen.com or calling 888-922-TURF.
